Some background...

rockcrawling woodpeckerThe name ‘FireTruck’ immediately conjures images of a big red truck, sirens blazing, racing through the traffic to be the first ones on the scene. The disciplined fire-team are well drilled and professional, and each knows where they should be and what they have to do to get the job done…

Well, our passion is hard core four wheel driving, not putting out fires. And our jeep FireTruck is a bright red TJ Jeep Wrangler… built for hard core four wheel driving competitions and rockcrawling events. Rocks, steep climbs, logs, mud… you name it and we’ll try to drive it!

Team ABT4x4 FireTruck formed late in 2004 with our sites pinned on all terrain style events such as Woodpecker, Nissan Trials, and Tuff Truck. These competitions combine a variety of four wheel driving obstacles and conditions which require a wide range of skills and equipment. From a near vertical rock wall, to a waste deep mud hole, to a wrecked car – events combine both natural and man-made obstacles to push teams to the limits of traction and gravity.

Scoring is based on a combination of points and/or time taken to complete each course. Points can be rewarded or deducted depending on how far you get around the course in a given time limit, having to reverse, using an electric recovery winch, straying off the course or hitting cones, etc. It is not unusual to see and hear metal bending or breaking, rubber smoking, or rigs on their roof (or all 3 at once!).

jeepMost competitions specify a team of 2 – a driver and a spotter/navigator. Due to the nature of the obstacles and courses, the spotter is very often the ‘drivers-eyes’ as the driver can’t see under the jeep or around the corner. The spotter helps to pick the right line to negotiate obstacles and stay within the course, whilst trying to keep the jeep ‘rubber-side-down’ all the way to the finish line. Having a strong spotter doesn’t hurt either, as some events allow the spotter to pull a rope to aid progress (or to keep the rig from tipping over!), and also to place rocks in strategic spots on the trail to smooth things out a touch (known as ‘stacking’).

Rockcrawling is enjoying strong growth in Australia as crowds and competitors alike discover the thrill of hard core four wheel driving. Most events are laid out with spectators in mind, and there is something for the entire family. The competition calendar is filling out, as more and more events pop up around Australia. Check the upcoming events calendar to find out where you can catch team FireTruck in action!

We are in it to win it, but we are gunna have a ball doing it and we’ll be sure to put on a great show… read on, send in some feedback,
